VISION: is toTo empower creative thinkers, writers, and visionaries to unearth spiritual treasures and pearls of wisdom from ancient spiritual traditions and to interpret that wisdom in light of the emerging theory of "neuroplasticity" as it applies to living in an "age of singularity." The author's mission is to create a pathway for others.
WHAT IS NEUROPLASTICITY? According to Norman Doidge, author of the book, The Brain That Changes Itself (2007), "neuroplasticity is one of the most extraordinary discoveries of the twentieth century." Ancient Greeks might have understood human heart as the seat of intelligence, but we postmoderns, depending on state-of-the-art technology have positively confirmed the fact that brain has whole lot to do with human intelligence.
Brain is a physical organ like the heart is also a physical organ, but neural wiring and rewiring inside the brain is the work of culture: Language, home, family, church, temple, mosque, syanagogue, school, college, company, corporation, and whole lot of life experiences. Until recently neuroscientists believed that an adult's brain, while it still functioned like an extraordinary glorious machine, did not change after a child entered the adolescence. The fact that the human brain changes throughout a person's life in response to intellectual stimulation, physical exercise, exposure to new cultural environments, learning opportunities, and challenges is a revolutionary discovery.
WHY WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT SPIRITUALITY IN RELATION TO NEUROPLASTICITY?
Brain science is the new "frontier of science," or perhaps the "last frontier of science," and spirituality the "perennial wisdom" of humanity as Aldous Huxley (1916-1959) described it. One is about the future, and the other is about the past, present, and future. As we gain a fresher understanding of spirituality through brain science, we must re-conceptualize what has been the perennial pursuit of humanity from time immemorial and restate its role in our personal lives as well as in the life of society.
SPIRITUALITY IN AN "AGE OF SINGULARITY"
This is an age of digital technology, information revolution, and the world of globalization. There is a "Second Copernican Revolution" taking place inside of our brains. Some experts are suggesting that we are already living in what Richard Restack calls the "neurosociety." Ray Kurzweil, the futurist, is predicting that by 2045 A.D. human beings will be living in an era of "singularity," when non biological machines invented by human brains and human ingenuity are going to outsmart human intelligence by billions of times.
Do we want to become machine-lke beings having "no corporeal existence with bodies that will not eventually wrinkle, breakdown or die," or protect our basic humanity and live like the way we humans have always lived with feelings, emotions, love, intimacy, friendship, marriage, children, fun, pleasure, laughter, play, music, singing, worship, praise and prayer? There is got to be a safe distance between man and the machine.
Dr. Mark often speaks in libraries, colleges, universities, churches, companies, and civic organizations.

God said to Abraham, "But for me, you would not be here." "I know that, Lord," Abraham answered, "but were I not here, there would be no one to think of you."
---The Old Jewish Legend
We might call ourselves Homo plasticus....Without neoteny and plasticity, we would still be naked savanna apes---without fire, without tools, without writing, lore, beliefs, or dreams. We would be 'nothing but' apes, instead of aspiring angels.

Seeing stars, it dreams of eternity. Hearing birds, it makes music. Smelling flowers, it is enraptured. Touching tools, it transforms the earth. But deprived of these sensory experiences, the human brain withers and dies.
--Ronald Kotulak, Inside the Brain (1997)
VISION:The author's vision is to interpret spirituality in light of new findings emerging from the study of human brain. The goal is to offer people tools and insights for wholesome living.
SPIRITUALITY IN THE AGE OF SINGULARITY: Our brains are getting wired differently as we adapt to living in the age of digital technology, information revolution, and the world of globalization. There is a "Second Copernican Revolution" taking place inside of our brains, to quote Carl Zimmer, author of Soul Made Flesh: The Discovery of the Brain--and How It Changed the World (2004). Richard Restack, author of 18 books on the subject of brain, including, The Naked Brain: How Emerging Neuroscience is Changing How We Live, Work and Love (2006), suggests that we are already living in what he calls "the neurosociety."
Ray Kurzweil, the futurist, author, and inventor is predicting that by 2045 A.D. human beings will be living in the "age of singularity," when non biological machines invented by human brains and human ingenuity would be outsmarting human intelligence billions of times. In other words, human intelligence is going to merge with the intelligence of machines.
If so, what is going to be the fate of human spirit and spirituality in the age of singularity? Do we want to become machine-like beings having "no corporeal existence with bodies that will not eventually wrinkle, breakdown or die" as Kurzweil puts it?
How about protecting our basic humanity with feelings, emotions, love, intimacy. friendship, marriage, children, fun, pleasure, laughter, play, music, dance, praise and prayer in the age of singularity?
